Learning by making
Year 9 wood design students learn invaluable skills
The Year 9 Wood Design programme at Scotch College encourages students to think outside the square to create a unique quality product, that they wouldn't normally find at the shops. The theme “Learning by Making” allows our boys to experience design work in collaboration with meeting the client’s need. This Semester, the theme was Japanese Cuisine.
In collaboration with our Senior School chef, Brenainn Metcalfe, the boys designed and fabricated their own sushi boards followed by a sushi making lesson in the kitchen.
Design and Technology teacher, Mr Ashley Keatch, said “All the boys came up with different designs that incorporated all the different components needed for eating sushi. This is a great example of boys learning by making.”
Year 9 student Charlie Duplock said “I never expected to be cooking sushi at the end of a Wood Design course!”
Senior Canteen Manager, Mr Brenainn Metcalfe said “I had the pleasure of hosting a sushi preparation class in junction with Mr Ashley Keatch’s class, where the boys manufactured a themed serving board that they used to present their sushi rolls on. I relish the opportunity to pass on my skills and knowledge to the younger generation and run a demo on how to roll the perfect sushi rolls. The boys all had a go and I gave plenty of pointers and advice to which they all lapped up. They all did really well and I must say I was impressed especially when they were presented. They looked very proud from their achievements.”
After eating their lunch on their personalized sushi board, the boys are now looking forward to the next project!
